Supreme Court: SCOTUS Decisions & News ...

One thing I learned from the video was that the government officials, including
Supreme Court Justices, take an oath to follow everything from the Constitution.I found this interesting because it gave me an deeper commitment to the officials to have national principles that have to be followed. I was surprised to learn that the lower federal courts were cases are heard by three judges and the Supreme Court has all nine Justice hear every case. I did not realized how different the processes are in the Supreme Court level. Another thing that  surprised me  is that oral arguments typically lasts only about an hour. Since these cases were important, I though that these argument would take much longer. Finally, I learned that the law clerks helped the Justices with researching, drafting and screening petitions. This was unexpected to me because I did not know how much of the work is supported by clerk from behind the scenes.

The most important thing that I learn is that the role of the Supreme Court is to follow the constitutional law in the United States. The laws and government align with the Constitution that you are able to follow the specific structure of the country. Another important thing that I learned is that the Supreme Court has riled on many issues in American history such as civil rights, abortion and government powers. This is very important because it makes the Supreme Court one of the most influential institution in preserving justice and protecting the rights of the citizens of the United States of America.

The most surprising thing that I learn is that cases can take five years rather than the normal three years to be resolved within the Supreme Court. This is surprising to me because it shows how complex the judicial process really is. I did not know that the court deals with cases from significant constitution implications that are required through detailed opinions. Since it takes a lot of time to be able to resolve things in court , there is a lot of delays to be able for citizens to be heard in court. I understand that they need to spend the time to be able to have people accurate decided which side is correct. I am surprised that this process could stop others that have urgent cases that should be taken earlier because of the importance of the cases to make sure that they are safe in society. The extended time shows that we need an balance between need for justice for the citizens as well as good decision making.

This video changed the way I think about the establishment of the Supreme Court as a powerful institution. Before 1801, it was not as influential but I now see how important it is that we maintain a balance legal system. The case Marbury v. Madison in 1803  showed that the Supreme Court to power through the judicial review. I understand that the power allowed the court to ensure that laws and government actions align with the constitution to protect citizens rights and check that the government power is reasonable. If we did not have an string Supreme Court , there would be none that would be the final say to interpret the Constitution which lead to inconsistencies and no check on power in the government. The Court's role in todays society is to uphold justice and democracy for citizens.
